Why Your Body Isn’t Broken—It’s Communicating – Dr. Tina Koopersmith
RETHINKING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: MORE LESSONS FROM CAMP
Same body —-different nervous system–who am I really??
What if the term “nervous system” is outdated? It was coined centuries ago, when scientists first mapped the body’s wiring. But just as we’ve evolved from the abacus to the smartphone to quantum computing, our understanding of human biology has evolved too. What we’ve traditionally called the nervous system is far more than a collection of nerves switching on and off. It’s an exquisitely intelligent neural network—a living communication system that is constantly sensing, adapting, learning, and recalibrating.
Today, I’d like to invite you to reimagine it as your Sensation Network: not a system of simple on/off switches, but one that functions more like a modern dimmer switch or smart lighting system—continuously adjusting intensity, timing, and response based on what’s happening inside you and around you. Every moment, your body is fine-tuning countless signals related to safety, connection, digestion, movement, pleasure, pain, healing, and energy. When we change the language, we change how we understand ourselves. And when we understand ourselves differently, we begin to live differently.
